How to obtain documentation to claim capital losses for shares?

Overview

If shares have disappeared from your client's account due to delisting, a zero balance, or other reasons, you can still obtain the documentation needed to support a capital loss claim at tax time.

Generating a trading report

You can generate a trading report directly from your client's Desktop Broker account by following the steps below:

  1. Log in to your client's Desktop Broker account.
  2. Navigate to Portfolio & Reporting, then select Reports.
  3. Generate a Financial Year Summary or Trading Report covering the relevant financial year.

This report summarises your client's trading activity and can be used as supporting documentation for a capital loss claim.

Shares that have been delisted or have a zero balance

For shares that are no longer visible in your client's portfolio due to delisting or a zero balance, you'll need to contact the relevant share registry directly to obtain documentation.
